Why is terminology management important?
Sound and consistent use of terminology lies at the foundation
of any effective authoring and translation effort. If the
use of terminology is ignored, terms may be applied inconsistently
across catalogues, user or service instructions and marketing
collateral. Of course, this not only reflects poorly on the
company and weakens the effectiveness of global communications,
but, worse still, may carry a safety or legal implication.
In our experience, the only way to solve this problem is to develop and maintain a central web-based terminological database accessed by all members of an organization and external partners, wherever they may be. This enables authors, translators, reviewers and QA specialists to share a common approach.
Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest by companies, both large and small, in rationalizing their use of corporate terminology. Sadly, there appears to be widespread inconsistency in the use of terminology in documentation that eventually becomes the source text for multilingual versions. If we had to state what we do best at Logos, it would almost certainly be managing terminology. Way back in 1995, Logos astounded the world by launching, on the Web, the Logos Living Dictionary, containing a million words in thirty languages. The sheer size of the dictionary was astonishing enough, but the pleasant surprise was that it was available to everyone free of charge.
Today, the Logos Dictionary is still free and boasts over seven million words in more than 200 languages - it has grown into the largest freely available on-line dictionary. The Logos website also provides contextual and reference material for terms within the vast Wordtheque knowledge management platform.
