When citizens reward the real actors behind the democratization of Europe.

The Grands Prix Newropeans 2004 were awarded Friday the 22nd of October in Paris to 11 organizations and European actors for their particular role in the democratization of the European Union.

This was the second edition of this unique awards ceremony in Europe that asks 500 representatives from the civil society in the 25 EU countries to vote via Internet for the winners, thanks to the technological support of Election-Europe.com.

From the leading European network of biological tissues, EuroBiobank, to organizations spearheaded by the European youth, Aegee-Europe and Cafe Babel, the winners that the Euro-Citizen jury selected represent particular dynamic groups that bring together tens of thousands of Europeans on a daily basis.

A sign of the times, while Jean-Claude Junker (the new Mr. Euro) won in the category "Politics," coming in in a very close second place was Paul Van Buitenen, while in a distant third was head of the EU Commission M. Barroso. Ironically, Mr. Van Buitenen was employed by the Commission in the past, but 5 years ago it was he that denounced the fraud and corruption running rampant among the institutions.

In the "Culture" category, it was « Goodbye Lenin » that won, while Easy Jet and Eurostar tied for first place in Mobility, only slightly beating the bus company Eurolines. As for the regions, it was the IANIS, network, linking regions by shared interests in technology, that easily won. In the Media category, EuroNews was elected by a vast majority of jury members. And in the domain of services, Logos helping Europeans in multiple languages barely won with Vodafone right behind.

As for the institutions, the European Court for Human Rights won first place, suggesting that it is not only the European Union institutions which are considered to be essential in the eyes of European citizens.

Franck Biancheri, the president of Newropeans, announced that next year's Grand Prix Newropeans 2005 will continue to grow stretching out to a jury of 1,000 to 2,000 representatives from the European civil society. Franck Biancheri, who is also President of TIESWeb, has proposed that next year, TIESWEB organize a similar project entitled TIESWeb's « Transatlantic Citizenship Grand Prix », aimed at rewarding those organizations/people that have best developed links between the American and European civil societies.

EU democratisation will require the invention of new tools

The Newropeans "Grands Prix" reward every year the actors (people and organisations) of EU democratisation:
Technological challenge. Democratic challenge. The Newropeans Networks are proud to have a Jury made of 500 citizens located in 25 countries elect the winners of the "Newropeans 2004 Grands Prix" thanks to the Internet and to election-europe.com, who graciously puts its state-of-the-art technology to the Grands Prix' disposition.
